Tips to Keep Squirrels Out of Your Attic This Winter
• Examine Your Attic Vents – If you have plastic attic vents, you’re giving squirrels an easy access point into your attic. Metal attic vents that are securely attached to your home are much better at keeping squirrels out. You can also screen your vents with ½” hardware cloth to keep critters out.
• Trim Tree Branches – Squirrels can jump long distances, so it’s best to keep tree limbs at least 10 feet away from your home. You’ll want to check your trees at least once per year because trees can grow quickly and leave a perfect path for squirrels to gain access to your roof and, ultimately, your attic.
• Seal Openings – Every few months, walk around your property to find new access points. Common access points include openings around siding, eaves, and any areas where pipes or utility lines enter your home. • Check Your Chimney – Add a chimney cap if you don’t already have one, and ensure there are no gaps around the chimney’s flashing.
