In Chattanooga, Tennessee, a remarkable rescue unfolded when an air medical team took on a mission unlike any before. Luca, a Belgian Malinois and dedicated patrol K-9 with the Clay County Sheriff’s Department in North Carolina, had been accidentally exposed to concentrated ozone. The exposure caused severe respiratory distress, leaving him weak, disoriented, and in urgent need of specialized care.
His handler found him vomiting and struggling to breathe, a heartbreaking sight for someone who had worked beside Luca for years. The bond between a K-9 officer and handler runs deep, built on trust, protection, and shared duty. Seeing Luca in such a vulnerable state made the situation even more urgent.

For the Erlanger LIFE FORCE Air Medical team, this mission marked a historic moment. It was their first-ever emergency transport for a K-9 in real-world conditions. The crew moved with precision, treating Luca not just as a patient but as a fellow first responder.
Inside the aircraft, specialized equipment and trained personnel ensured Luca received continuous care. The goal was simple but vital: get him to advanced veterinary treatment within the “Golden Hour,” the crucial window when timely care can make the difference between life and death.
The flight carried Luca to the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, cutting down what could have been hours of ground travel. That time saved gave Luca a fighting chance.
The K-9 Transport Program had been practiced before, but never in a true emergency. This mission proved that the system works. It showed that working dogs like Luca can receive the same urgency and expertise as human patients when it matters most.
“These K-9s are heroes who protect our communities every single day,” said LIFE FORCE K-9 Transport Coordinator Stacy Prater. “They deserve every fighting chance when they are injured in the line of duty.”

Luca has spent six to seven years serving his community. At around eight or nine years old, he had already given much of his life to protecting others. Behind his strong, disciplined exterior is a dog who relies on his team just as much as they rely on him.
For the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, the experience was both frightening and humbling. In a rural area where advanced animal care can be far away, options are limited. The airlift bridged that gap in a way that ground transport never could.
“It was a relief we were able to get Luca there in such a brief window,” the department shared. “We’re very appreciative of the program.”
