Kiki was in a terrible state when she arrived at Freshfields, with the most severe allergies we had ever seen. Desperately tearing her skin to pieces because she was in agony, she had to wear a cone to help her cope. Seeing Kiki in such distress was heartbreaking for our staff and volunteers. We had to help her, and we got to work immediately.
The first step was to identify specifically what was causing Kiki’s allergies. It proved more complicated than thought.
With the assistance of our excellent on-site vet, we put together a plan. We tried low-dose steroids and antihistamines, which helped a little at first, but clearly wasn’t enough. We tried an elimination diet, reducing environmental triggers such as pollen and dust, and eye and ear drops. Nothing was working, and Kiki was deteriorating. We were treating some symptoms, but not the root of the issue.
On our vet’s advice, we tried Atopica, a treatment for chronic allergic dermatitis, a skin condition caused by the immune system’s response to allergens. The results were amazing! Kiki was at last able to manage without a cone, which cheered her up enormously.
We can’t believe the difference in this lovely lady! The scratching has now stopped, she is happy, purring, and enjoying her life. Kiki will need Atopica for life to manage her condition and maintain her health, but she’s now a healthy, contented and affectionate cat.
None of this would have been possible without expert, high-quality veterinary treatment. This is why we always need your support – to transform the lives of animals like Kiki.
