Under the scorching Florida sun, a tiny black puppy sat trapped inside a locked car, struggling to breathe as temperatures climbed dangerously high outside a busy shopping center. With only slightly cracked windows offering little relief, the frightened dog panted heavily while heat filled the vehicle like an oven. Concerned witnesses quickly realized the puppy was in serious distress and called 911 for help. Within minutes, Lady Lake police officers rushed to the scene, determined to save the exhausted animal before the unbearable conditions inside the car became deadly.
The incident happened around 2:25 p.m. on May 16 in Lady Lake, Florida, outside a Five Below store along U.S. Highway 27/441. Temperatures had climbed past 92 degrees, turning the inside of the parked vehicle into a dangerous oven within minutes.
Someone nearby noticed a small black puppy trapped inside the car with the windows barely cracked and immediately called 911. That quick decision may have saved the young dog’s life.
When Officers Jeffrey Burns and Michael Tisdell arrived, they could immediately see the puppy was suffering. Body camera footage captured the urgency in their voices as they approached the vehicle.
“It’s pretty hot in the car. It’s a puppy,” one officer said while peering through the window.
The tiny dog was panting heavily and appeared weak from the intense heat. Officers noted that the puppy felt extremely warm, with one saying her “ears are cooking” as they prepared to get the vehicle open.
Inside the car, the frightened puppy had likely been trapped for at least 40 minutes. Even with the windows cracked slightly, the air inside had become dangerously hot. Dogs can quickly suffer heatstroke in these conditions, especially young puppies who are more vulnerable to extreme temperatures.
The officers worked quickly with an unlocking kit to open the door before the situation became even more serious.
Once the vehicle was unlocked, the rescue became emotional.
“Come on, come on,” one officer gently encouraged as he carefully lifted the exhausted puppy from the car.
The moment the puppy reached the cooler air outside, relief seemed immediate. Officers placed her inside an air-conditioned patrol vehicle and offered her water. Body camera video showed the thirsty dog eagerly drinking as she slowly began recovering from the ordeal.
“You think she’s thirsty?” one officer asked as the puppy drank desperately from the container.
Puppy Begins Recovering After Rescue
The puppy’s condition improved once she cooled down, giving officers and witnesses a hopeful ending after such a dangerous situation. Her breathing appeared calmer, and she responded positively to the care she received inside the patrol car.
Police later identified the dog’s owner as 26-year-old Yeneese Morejon. Officers arrested her at the scene on an animal cruelty charge after she reportedly told police she had only been inside the store briefly and that the checkout line was long.
Body camera footage showed an officer informing her of the arrest while investigators continued documenting the scene.
Lady Lake Police Chief Steve Hunt praised both the responding officers and the person who called 911 after noticing the puppy in distress. Authorities said the case highlights how rapidly temperatures inside parked vehicles can become life-threatening for animals, even when windows are partially open.
In Florida’s intense heat, the inside of a vehicle can rise to deadly temperatures within minutes. For pets trapped inside, every second matters.
Thankfully, this puppy’s story ended with caring strangers, fast action, and a second chance to cool down safely.
