It is not every day that firefighters answer a call expecting to rescue a stranded dog only to discover they are helping a frightened wild animal fighting to survive. That surprising scene unfolded in Florida when emergency crews responded to reports of an animal trapped in a canal. What looked like a routine rescue quickly became an unforgettable mission as rescuers worked patiently to reach the exhausted creature, whose determination to stay alive and fear of people made every moment more challenging until its true identity was finally revealed.

Firefighters with the Cape Coral Fire Department responded to reports of a dog trapped in a canal at Britannia Lake. But as they worked to reach the exhausted animal, they realized this rescue would be unlike any they had expected.

The frightened creature repeatedly swam from one side of the canal to the other, desperately searching for a safe place to escape. Clearly exhausted from its struggle, it refused to approach rescuers, making the operation even more challenging.

Thankfully, a nearby kayaker named Denae Judd stepped in to help.

Judd had been paddling through the canal when she noticed firefighters working to reach the struggling animal. She volunteered to keep watch from the water, giving rescuers an extra set of eyes as the frightened creature searched for cover.

Eventually, the animal crawled beneath a dock, squeezing into a tight space where it could no longer be seen from shore. Judd alerted firefighters to its exact location, allowing them to carefully plan the next step of the rescue.

One firefighter put on a life jacket and entered the water, carefully moving beneath the dock to reach the trapped animal. Despite being frightened and exhausted, the young creature remained hidden until rescuers were finally able to gently lift it to safety.

Only then did everyone realize the stranded “dog” was actually a young coyote.

According to the Cape Coral Fire Department, the coyote pup was exhausted after its ordeal and was not in any condition to be released back into the wild immediately.

The department later shared video of the dramatic rescue, showing the firefighter carefully navigating beneath the dock before safely carrying the small coyote back to shore. Photos from the scene captured the relieved rescuer holding the pup while another image showed firefighters smiling alongside Judd, whose quick thinking played a key role in the successful rescue.

Recognizing her efforts, the Cape Coral Fire Department presented Judd with a Community Recognition Coin for her assistance during the unusual rescue.

Although the call began with reports of a stranded dog, it ended with a frightened young wild animal getting the help it desperately needed. Thanks to teamwork, patience, and compassion, the exhausted coyote pup was safely rescued, giving it a chance to recover after its difficult adventure.
