Some friendships arrive quietly, while others waddle straight into your life and change everything. For the Cannarelli family of New York, one unexpected animal would become far more important than anyone imagined. Justin and Tori Cannarelli already shared a busy home with their children, Cameron and Charlie, and their beloved Golden Retriever, Barley. Then Louie, a small duck who was never supposed to stay permanently, entered the picture. What began as a temporary arrangement soon blossomed into an extraordinary friendship, bringing companionship, playful energy, and a renewed sense of happiness to a dog who had slowly lost her familiar spark.
“I never expected to own a duck. Never expected him to stay long term,” Tori told CBS News.
Louie was never supposed to become a permanent pet. The family initially began looking for a duck for Justin’s garden center, but a Facebook Marketplace listing changed their plans. They found Louie after he had hatched in a Long Island elementary school classroom. Instead of heading straight to the garden center, however, the little duck came home with Tori.
What was meant to be a brief stay soon became something much more meaningful. Louie found his place in the family, especially in Barley’s heart.
An Unlikely Friendship Brings Barley’s Spark Back
A couple of years earlier, Barley had begun experiencing seizures. Medication successfully stopped them, bringing the family some much-needed relief, but Justin and Tori soon noticed a difficult change in their beloved golden retriever. Barley no longer seemed like herself. The energetic, expressive dog they knew had become noticeably subdued.
“She just lost her spunk,” Tori said. “She lost her goldenness.”
The family worried that this quieter version of Barley might be permanent. Since she needed the medication to control her seizures, they believed they would simply have to accept the changes that came with it.
“We thought, oh man, this medication we have to give her for the rest of her life,” Justin said. “So this is how she’s going to be.”
Then Louie arrived. At first, the connection between a Golden Retriever and a duck may have seemed like little more than curiosity. But day by day, the Cannarellis watched a genuine friendship take shape. Louie would peck playfully at Barley, encouraging her to interact. Barley began responding, and soon their playful exchanges became part of everyday life.
More importantly, the family noticed something returning to Barley’s face and body language. The dog who had seemed to lose her enthusiasm was beginning to show flashes of her old personality.
“She started smiling again,” Tori said. “She started wagging her tail. She started having personality again.”
Louie’s companionship appeared to give Barley a new reason to play, explore, and engage with the world around her. Instead of spending her days withdrawn, she had a feathered companion inviting her into another game.
Today, Louie and Barley are nearly inseparable. Louie pecks at his canine best friend, Barley chases him, and the pair wrestle before settling down to relax together. Their friendship is unusual, but that may be part of what makes it so special. Neither animal seems concerned that dogs and ducks are not expected to become best friends. To them, companionship is simply companionship.
Justin and Tori may never know exactly why Louie’s arrival seemed to awaken something in Barley. Their son Cameron, however, offered a beautifully simple explanation.
“She wanted to be friends with Louie and hang out with him a lot, so she kind of stretched her joy and fit in with him.”
For a duck who was only supposed to visit, Louie has certainly made himself at home. He did more than become another member of the Cannarelli family. He helped bring back the playful spark in a Golden Retriever who needed a friend.
