A routine response to a business alarm turned into a frightening search for a beloved police K-9 after Gael, a young yellow Labrador, suddenly escaped from his handler in Miami Gardens. What began as an ordinary Monday night assignment quickly became deeply personal for Officer K. Stanley and the rest of the Miami Gardens Police Department. Surveillance footage later revealed an even more troubling development: Gael had apparently been struck by a vehicle while running through the neighborhood, yet somehow kept moving.
Gael disappeared at around 9:35 p.m. near the 200 block of Northwest 195th Street. Stanley and her K-9 partner had responded to a business alarm when the unexpected happened. Police said that when Stanley opened the rear door of her patrol vehicle, Gael suddenly bolted. The Labrador ran east across Northwest Second Avenue and did not respond to his handler’s commands.
Investigators began gathering surveillance footage from nearby businesses in hopes of determining where he had gone. One recording showed Gael racing through a tire shop after escaping, giving officers an important glimpse of his path.
Another surveillance recording, which authorities have not publicly released, reportedly captured a much more distressing moment. Police said Gael was struck by a vehicle, but despite the impact, he continued running east. The collision added urgency to an already difficult search. With Gael’s condition unknown, officers were not only trying to locate a missing K-9 but also hoping to find him before any possible injuries became more serious.
An All-Hands Search for Gael
Miami Gardens Police deployed all available units to search for the missing Labrador. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit also assisted as authorities searched the surrounding area from above.
Despite the extensive effort, officers were unable to locate Gael. By Tuesday night, authorities temporarily paused the search and reopened an area that had been cordoned off for much of the afternoon.
Steadman Stahl of the Florida Police Benevolent Association said officials did not know where Gael had gone but remained hopeful that someone in the community might spot him. Gael is microchipped, which could also help identify him if he is found.
By Wednesday morning, officers were back in neighborhoods searching for clues. Teams went door to door handing out flyers, speaking with residents and reviewing security camera footage that might reveal where Gael traveled after he was last seen.
Drones were also used to search from above. Stahl described the effort as an “all-hands-on-deck approach,” with officers examining every possible lead that could help trace Gael’s movements.
Gael is approximately two and a half years old and weighs between 55 and 65 pounds. He has beige fur, brown eyes, and was last seen wearing a distinctive black collar bearing the words, “Mama says I’m special.” Those small details could prove important if someone encounters him. After being frightened, separated from his handler, and reportedly struck by a vehicle, Gael may have continued traveling while confused or scared.
For Stanley and her fellow officers, the search is about far more than recovering a working police dog. K-9 partners spend countless hours training and working alongside their handlers, creating bonds that extend well beyond their duties.
Stahl emphasized that connection while describing Gael as part of the law enforcement community and the wider Miami Gardens family. For those who know and work with him, his empty place beside his handler is deeply felt.
Now, officers continue hoping for the moment when Gael is found and reunited with Stanley. Until then, every piece of surveillance footage, every neighborhood search, and every possible sighting carries the same hope: that this young K-9 survived his frightening journey and will make it safely back to the people waiting for him.
