What does true hospitality look like? Babe and Succession star James Cromwell believes it includes serving food that’s kinder to everyone. Encouraged by Marriott’s recent progress for animals, Cromwell is asking the company to consider another meaningful step for sensitive, social hens: making vegan JUST Egg available at all Marriott properties.

In a letter to Marriott CEO Anthony Capuano, the Oscar-nominated actor points to a new PETA video in which he bonds with a rescued hen named Hermione and explains why “cage-free” eggs aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. Take a look:

As Cromwell explains, “cage-free” doesn’t mean cruelty-free. Hens can still spend their lives crowded by the thousands into massive sheds, where disease, injuries, and stress-related behaviors remain common. And when their egg production declines, the industry sends them to slaughter.

Marriott has already made progress for animals, including no longer selling camel and horse rides at the Pyramids of Giza and offering vegan egg dishes at many of its properties. Now Cromwell is asking the company to build on that progress by making vegan eggs available at all its hotels.

Chickens are intelligent, curious individuals who form close bonds, communicate with one another, and even begin teaching calls to their chicks before they hatch. The best way to spare hens from suffering is to go vegan.
