Luckily, a kind-hearted individual found him and brought him to a shelter where he received medical help. Soon after, a family in Canada adopted him, but it wasn’t the right fit, and they eventually gave him up. Little did the deserving dog know that his life would change for the better!

An American family met River in Canada and instantly felt a connection. They decided to adopt him and bring him back to the United States. The first week went smoothly, but as River settled into his new home, his fear began to surface. He was afraid of doorways, getting into cars, and other dogs, which was understandable considering his traumatic past. He was also uncomfortable with anyone entering his personal space.

It took about a year of hard work and dedication, but River’s new family made significant progress in helping him overcome his anxiety. River’s adoptive mom became his running buddy, and he would accompany her almost anywhere. He proved to be an incredible athlete, capable of running 20 miles without issues. River also developed a love for the snow-covered mountains.

River’s adoptive mom, who had experienced abuse in her past, felt a deep connection with River. They shared a quiet understanding and formed a close bond. She helped River overcome his fears and anxieties through patience and love.

As River’s fear dissipated, he started to relax and enjoy life. He was prescribed a low dose of Prozac, which helped him feel more at ease. River transformed from a dog struggling to take naps due to his street dog mindset to sleeping peacefully.

Curious about River’s breed, his family had him genetically tested. The results identified him as a “Village Dog,” a breed that existed before modern-day breeds. River’s expressive nature made it easy to know his thoughts through his facial expressions.
