Mid America Pet Food recalled certain lots of its Victor Super Premium Dog Food Select Beef Meal & Brown Rice Formula on October 30th. On November 9th, 2023, the company announced that it was expanding the recall to include a variety of other recipes, including some cat food.

Like the original recall, the expanded recall is due to potential Salmonella contamination. If you feed your dog a Mid America Pet Food brand, check to make sure your dog’s food isn’t affected.

Which Products were Recalled?

Mid America Pet Foods pulled a variety of Victor, Wayne Feeds, Eagle Mountain, and Member’s Mark pet food, all of which were made at the company’s Mount Pleasant facility and have a best-by date that’s before 10/31/2024. The recall now contains 35 different formulas, which can be viewed here.

The recalled products were sent to distributors and retailers across the United States. To find the best by date, look at the middle top of the back of each bag.

The voluntary recall occurred because some of the lots tested positive for Salmonella through random testing. Seven people reported Salmonella infections related to these products as of November 1st, 2023.

How Can Salmonella Affect Dogs and Humans?

Food testing positive for Salmonella can affect both dogs and humans. Pets with Salmonella may experience lethargy, diarrhea, vomiting, decreased appetite, or abdominal pain. Even if the pet appears healthy, they could still carry the bacteria and pass it to humans. Thus, it’s best to contact a veterinarian if your dog has come into contact with the recalled food just to be safe.

Humans with Salmonella could experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. In extreme cases, it could lead to more serious conditions like arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract infections. If you experience any unusual symptoms after handling the recalled food, contact your healthcare provider right away.

What to Do with the Recalled Products

All retailers and distributors have been told to remove the recalled products from their shelves. If you have one of these products at home, stop feeding it to your dog immediately and dispose of it in a way that no pets, humans, or wildlife can access it. Never sell or donate recalled food.

Clean any surfaces the food came into contact with, such as counters, storage containers, bowls, and measuring cups. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after throwing away the food.

To ask about refunds and additional information, you can contact Mid America Pet Food at 1-888-428-7544 from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. EST any day of the week.
