According to the company announcement, the contamination was identified after the FDA collected and tested product samples. Why This Recall Matters

Both Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes can cause illness in animals that eat contaminated food. They can also pose a risk to people who handle contaminated pet food or touch bowls, utensils, storage areas, or other surfaces exposed to it.

Pets infected with Salmonella or Listeria monocytogenes may experience lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets may have decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected pets can also carry the bacteria and potentially expose people or other animals even if they otherwise appear healthy.

In people, Salmonella infection can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. Although most people recover without treatment, some infections can become severe and require hospitalization.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause symptoms including headache, fever, muscle aches, lethargy, nausea, diarrhea, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Pregnant women, newborns, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of serious illness. Infection during pregnancy can also lead to serious pregnancy complications.

Anyone experiencing symptoms after handling contaminated pet food should contact their healthcare provider. Pet parents should contact their veterinarian if a pet consumed an affected product and develops symptoms.

What Pet Parents Should Do

Consumers who purchased either affected lot should stop feeding the product immediately and return any unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Because these are raw pet food products, careful cleaning is particularly important. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling the food, and clean and sanitize any bowls, utensils, preparation surfaces, storage areas, and other items the recalled food may have touched.

Raw pet food should also be kept separate from human food and stored frozen or refrigerated until use.

Monitor pets that have consumed the recalled food for signs including vomiting, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever, lethargy, decreased appetite, or abdominal pain. Contact your veterinarian if symptoms develop.
