A routine air conditioning repair turned into a frightening ordeal for a Florida family when their tiny senior dog was allegedly harmed inside the place where he should have been safest. Boomer, a 12-year-old Chihuahua weighing just 5 pounds, was home with another dog while an HVAC technician worked at the family’s Sanford residence on Aug. 24, 2026. What his owners expected to be an ordinary service visit took a disturbing turn when a pet monitoring camera captured an encounter that would soon lead to an arrest.
The camera was built into a dog treat dispenser and happened to be recording while the technician was inside the home. Boomer’s owner, Ryan Menzies, said his wife was watching the camera feed when she noticed the little Chihuahua approach the worker. According to the Sanford Police Department, footage captured the technician kicking Boomer with enough force to knock the small dog unconscious. The dog was then left alone for several seconds after the alleged attack.
For Boomer’s family, seeing what happened was devastating. Menzies recalled being at work when he watched the footage and immediately felt overwhelmed by what he was seeing.
“I was standing in the parking garage at work and I said out loud, ‘Oh my God,’ and almost started crying,” Menzies said. “Then anger took over.”
Boomer Returns Home to Recover
The family provided the footage to Sanford police, who arrested 43-year-old Richardson Noel on a charge of aggravated animal cruelty. Noel has since been released on bond, with further court proceedings pending. The family’s immediate concern, however, was Boomer’s health. At 12 years old and weighing only 5 pounds, the Chihuahua was especially vulnerable to an impact of that nature. His owners took him to a veterinarian to determine whether he had suffered serious injuries.
Fortunately, the examination brought some reassuring news. Menzies said veterinarians found no broken bones, and Boomer did not appear to be favoring any part of his body. There were still concerns that he could have internal bruising that would not be immediately visible.
“They said nothing is broken. He’s not favoring anything,” Menzies said. “We think what he has maybe some internal bruising that you obviously wouldn’t be able to see.”
Boomer has since returned to the familiar surroundings of home, where his family can keep a close eye on his recovery. Menzies said the senior Chihuahua has been eating treats, resting, and gradually showing his playful personality again. Those small signs of normalcy have offered some comfort after an experience that deeply unsettled the family. Boomer may not understand why the frightening encounter happened, but he is once again surrounded by the people who know him, care for him, and can give him a safe place to recover.
The incident has also changed how the family intends to handle future maintenance visits. Menzies said they plan either to have someone home when a worker enters the house or to keep their dogs safely behind a closed door during service appointments. The family had only one camera operating inside the home at the time, and it happened to be the camera attached to Boomer’s treat dispenser. Menzies said he is grateful it was recording, since the footage documented an incident that otherwise might never have been discovered.
For now, Boomer is back where his family wants him most. After a frightening experience inside his own home, the little senior Chihuahua is resting, enjoying his treats, and slowly returning to the playful dog his owners know and love.
