A mother dog found beside a rural Ohio road had already endured more suffering than rescuers could see at first glance. Weak, painfully thin, and struggling for every breath, she had somehow survived long enough to give birth to five puppies and nurse them while trapped in a desperate situation. When rescuers reached her in Winchester, the newborns were cold, wet, and still covered in afterbirth. Their exhausted mother had tried to care for them despite wounds so severe that simply staying alive had become a fight.
The Brown County Humane Society Dog Shelter received the call on a Friday night. When rescuers arrived, they found the mother and her five newborn puppies near a crate along the roadside. Flies swarmed around the small family. The mother’s face and mouth were badly swollen, and infected wounds had already formed around the injured areas. She was emaciated, extremely weak, and having difficulty breathing. Yet she had continued nursing her puppies.
The babies were believed to be only hours old. They were hungry and chilled, and their mother appeared too exhausted to clean them after their birth. Even in her condition, she had reportedly managed to struggle toward the road, where Good Samaritans noticed her and called for help.
Rescuers quickly loaded the mother and her puppies and headed for Rolling Hills Veterinary Service. The veterinary team was preparing to close when the severely injured dog and five vulnerable newborns arrived.
Staff immediately began warming, cleaning, and feeding the puppies while veterinarians turned their attention to their mother. Given the condition of her face, rescuers initially believed she might have been struck by a vehicle. The examination revealed something far more disturbing.
X-rays Revealed the Extent of Her Injuries
Veterinarians discovered that the mother dog had been shot in the face. Even more troubling, the injuries did not appear to be recent. According to the shelter, the veterinarian believed she may have been living with them for a week or longer.
X-rays revealed multiple bullets and fragments throughout her face and head. Some appeared to be relatively superficial, but one fragment was associated with the most serious damage and her breathing difficulties. Unfortunately, that fragment was located in an area veterinarians could not safely reach.
For the people caring for her, the discovery was devastating. They were looking at a dog who may have spent days surviving with gunshot wounds while becoming increasingly weak. Then, while still struggling to breathe, she had given birth to five puppies.
Through everything, her maternal instincts remained strong. She had nursed her newborns even when her own body had little strength left to give. The shelter decided to name her Mercy, a name chosen to represent the compassion rescuers hoped would define the rest of her life rather than the cruelty she had already experienced.
Mercy was placed on antibiotics, steroids, pain medication, and intravenous fluids as veterinarians worked to stabilize her. Because of the medications required for her treatment, she could no longer safely nurse her puppies.
That meant five newborns suddenly needed around-the-clock care. Two veterinary technicians at Rolling Hills stepped in to bottle feed the puppies. The tiny babies required warmth, frequent meals and close observation, but the shelter reported that they were doing well under their caregivers’ attention.
Meanwhile, Mercy faced another major step in her recovery. Veterinarians planned surgery to remove the bullet fragments they could safely access. They could not remove every fragment, including the one associated with some of the most serious damage, because attempting to reach it could create additional risks. The goal was to remove what could be safely addressed and give Mercy’s body the best opportunity to heal.
Her long-term prognosis remained uncertain. Rescuers did not yet know how much permanent damage she had suffered or whether her breathing would completely recover. After seeing everything she had already survived, however, they believed she deserved the opportunity to heal and experience a comfortable life.
Mercy’s story is painful because of what happened to her, but it is also defined by what followed. Good Samaritans noticed a suffering dog beside the road. Shelter workers responded when she desperately needed them, and a veterinary team immediately began caring for both mother and puppies.
Most remarkably, Mercy herself never stopped fighting. Despite hunger, weakness, infection, and devastating injuries, she brought five puppies into the world and cared for them for as long as her body allowed. Now, while her puppies grow stronger under the watch of their caregivers, Mercy finally has people fighting just as hard for her as she fought for them.
